S. Francis of Assisi wears a threadbare habit and holds a skull, symbol of Death, in his hands. The painting dates from the Counter-Reformation period in which great importance was attached to the depiction of saints. Lights, shadows and shapes bring out the tragic character of Caravaggio, who nevertheless drew on the most famous biographers to depict the saint.
