Matteo Perez painted thirteen frescoes in the Grand Master's Palace in Valletta on the great siege of Malta in May 1565 by the Turkish troops of Suleiman the Magnificent. This is one of the works that introduced Mannerism to Malta. Here we see the scene of the coming of the Grand Relief (7 September 1565). The arrival of reinforcements was the coup de grace for the Turks, who after five hours of fighting retreated and boarded their ships.
