David with the head of Goliath, detail

Decapitated head of Goliath with open mouth and eyes. In the physiognomy of the defeated giant is a self-portrait of Caravaggio, which has provided the cue for numerous readings of the painting in a psychoanalytic key. Indeed, in the period to which the painting dates, the painter was in Naples awaiting a pardon from the Pope.
