Sesostris III breastplate

This necklace in gold, glass paste and semi-precious stones, made using the cloisonné technique, was discovered at Dahshûr, in the funerary complex of Sesostris III and in particular in the tomb of one of his daughters, Princess Sathathor. The composition is balanced, elegant and symmetrical. The two names of the sovereign, that of pharaoh and that of the family, are flanked by two crowned hawks perched on the symbol of gold, nebou, as an emblem of royalty; behind them are two cobras wrapped around the solar disc and bearing the ankh cross, the symbol of eternal life.
