Detail. God of the dead and lord of the Afterlife, Osiris was an ancient deified dead king. According to myth, he was killed out of jealousy by his brother Seth, his body dismembered and dispersed throughout Egypt. The goddess Isis, his wife, with the help of her sister Nephthys, succeeded in reassembling her husband's body, by whom she had a posthumous son, Horo, who as an adult avenged his father's death. Osiris was the object of particular veneration at Busiris and at Abydos, where he was buried.
