Detail of the base of the canopy in which sits the sovereign Amenhotep III, at whose court Khaemhat performed the function of Royal Scribe and Supervisor of the Royal Granaries. The entire decoration of the throne refers to the subjugation of enemies by the ruler. In the image one can see a number of figures of different ethnicities tied by the elbows: these traditionally represent the so-called Nine Arches, i.e. Egypt's enemy foreign populations. They are placed under the king's feet, indicating submission to Egyptian power. The names of these populations are rendered in hieroglyphic characters placed inside an oval shape.
