On the first arch in front of the apse is the Annunciation, based on a primitive legend. Mary can be seen in the desert outside the city walls drawing water from a spring. When she returns home, the angel greets her. In the lower left corner is a pelican, a symbol in the Middle Ages of Christ. Below this scene is written Gabriel's greeting.
