Statue of the Dying Galata. Detail of the face

This sculpture does not depict a gladiator, as was believed, instead it represents a dying galata. It is a Roman copy of a Greek bronze original from the School of Pergamon, and was probably part of a group commemorating the victory of Atalus I, King of Pergamon. The nobility and suffering of the dying body are depicted with remarkable sensitivity, making it one of the most beautiful works of Antiquity.
